First thing I did was to replace the metal ring, which is plated steel, with a stainless steel ring.
Using the item as pictered is fine but in my case I wanted to make it one notch tighter and the way to do that is to unsnap and resnap it to the next tighter location.
In theory that’s fine, but if u look at the picture then visualize what will happen by doing so: the inner leather will get tighter (smaller) and “ride” UNDER the piece of leather holding the metal ring. That ends up being too thick (3 layers of leather and an empty lower snap). I am thinking of cutting that extra length holding the last lower snap but my fear is that the stitching wil unravel.
There was some unpleasant pinching between the metal ring and the piece of leather holding it.
It works, but make sure your shaved, because ouch, it pulls sometimes.
